Film Tax Relief (FTR)

FTR is a scheme implemented by the UK government for the creative industries, aimed to help reduce the cost of filming for professionals making films or TV shows for Britain.

Each year, this relief saves film production companies significant amounts of money. To qualify for the scheme, companies must prove that the end result of filming will be a British film that passes the UK Film Tax Credit Cultural Test. Regardless of the size of production, all British film production companies could be eligible to claim a tax rebate of up to 25% for their qualifying expenses.

Once your company has received its certification for being verified by the cultural test, a cash rebate can be calculated and claimed.

Animation Tax Relief (ATR)

Introduced in 2003, ATR has continued to encourage and support companies in the creative sector and has resulted in over £153m in cash handouts.

The scheme provides a relief that for any company creating a programme using animated imagery intended for UK broadcast. There is no minimum spend for this category of creative corporation tax relief, but a detailed record keeping that shows the costs involved is require to secure this creative tax relief.

There are specific costs that are included in the legislation, namely pre-production, principal photography and post-production. ATR cannot be claimed for outgoings like development, distribution and other non-production activities.

It’s also worth noting that ATR is also not applicable to advertisements or promotional programmes, news programmes, live broadcasting (including theatre  and artistic performance) and programmes used for training.

To be eligible for this relief, the production company must be able to prove that:

  • The programme must pass an animation tax relief cultural test;
  • It must be an animated programme intended for broadcast;
  • At least 51% of costs spent must be on animation production expenditures;
  • 10% of the core expenditure must be spent in the UK.
